Pepperit Managing Director and social media expert, Ryan Shelley, was cited in The Australian regarding a landmark Facebook defamation case before the NSW Supreme Court.
The case asks the question of whether a news publisher is liable for the Facebook comments of others on their Facebook page. Shelley was engaged as an expert witness in the case. Specifically, he was asked to assess the technical ability of media outlets to monitor and moderate the Facebook comments of others.
“There are an infinite number of ‘hacks’ and ‘work-arounds’ that media organisations can use to block offensive commentary. Random sampling, spot checking and Facebook’s word filter tools can block defamatory comments and reduce the potential for defamation.”
